Chapter Nine

Denny was gorgeous: auburn hair, green eyes, and a wide friendly smile. He didn’t seem at all bent out of shape that I’d joined them for lunch. He shook my hand warmly and his grip was firm.

Naturally I hated him instantly.

“You’re Liam?” He stood a few inches taller than me, and when he patted my back, it made me feel like a toddler. “I pictured you differently.”

“Is that right?” I frowned.

“Yeah.” He laughed.

Unlike Thompson, I could read Denny easily. He’d expected me to be a mousy nerd and even weirder than I was. It made me curious how Thompson had described me to him. His attraction to Thompson was like a wall of warm, gooey taffy. Whether it was fair or not, the fact that he was already so into my partner annoyed me. Denny was most definitely open to a real relationship with Thompson.

“So you’re the party animal who kept Thompson up past his bedtime.” I made sure I sounded amused and not annoyed.

Thompson looked uncomfortable and his cheeks were pink.

“Sorry.” Denny grinned. “We were having such a good time, I hated for the evening to end.”

His heartfelt announcement made my stomach clench with distaste. But I forced myself to respond politely. “I’m glad.” I met Thompson’s uptight gaze. “He deserves some fun in his life.”

“That’s what I told him,” Denny said as the hostess led us to a big booth in the corner. “Sometimes you just have to let loose and live a little.”

“Sure.” I remembered when I’d been someone who knew how to have a good time too. William and I had done plenty of dinners with friends and had an actual social life. But then he’d died and I’d turned into a grief-stricken grump who did nothing but work all the time just so I wasn’t alone with my tortured thoughts.

Denny scooted in the booth first, and I was surprised when Thompson hesitated about which side to get in. He started to sit next to me, but then he caught himself and moved over next to Denny.

“I’m glad it turned out well. Blind dates are usually a nightmare.” I studied my menu and tried to ignore how much it bugged me that Denny made sure his shoulder touched Thompson’s.

Thompson was unusually quiet. He’d barely said a few words since we’d met up with Denny. On the surface, Denny didn’t seem to care. He was one of those guys who always had a funny story. He was hugely confident. I couldn’t blame him; he had every right to be. But I could also sense he was a little nervous about what Thompson really thought of him. He was assured they shared a strong sexual connection, but he was trying to figure out if Thompson was open to more with him.

Why should he be open to more so soon? What’s the rush?

“So you’re a fireman?” I addressed Denny, if only to shut up the stream of irritating thoughts ping-ponging around in my skull.

“Yeah, ten years.”

“And it’s like a family thing?”

He smiled.
